The Feminine Tone Chorus

In 1998, after a studio space was finished in her home, Maricel Lucero sent word throughout the community inviting women to join her in forming a women’s chorus. The turn out at that first rehearsal was overwhelming.   She then decided to name the chorus, “The Feminine Tone,” celebrating women, community, and the healing power of music.

The mission statement, written by the chorus managers in 1998 and placed on the back of the concert program each season, states:

“We are a powerful chorus of women from diverse musical backgrounds and experiences.  We joyfully come together as a musical community to celebrate womanhood and to inspire love, unity, peace, and understanding among peoples.”

Since its inception, the 30-35 member chorus has consistently performed two concerts in April and December as a culmination of each rehearsal season.   The chorus performs an eclectic mix of songs from diverse cultures and traditions in their original languages.  The music is memorized and sung in four to eight part harmony.   From heartfelt African freedom songs to Renaissance madrigals, from haunting British Isles melodies and polyrhythmic Cuban folk tunes to songs of contemporary women composers.  The repertoire is rich, unique, and inspiring.

Frequent guest artists include pianists Charles Houmard and Nancy Wendlandt,  percussionists Hafiz Shabazz and Steve Ferraris, Celtic band Gypsy Reel, Latin guitarist Rafael Flores, flutists Kathi Byam and Ariel Cahn-Flores, and members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra string quartet.

The chorus has shared their uplifting gift of song with cancer survivors in Springfield Hospital, women in the Windsor Correctional Facility, sexual abuse survivors in “Take Back the Night” events, and special needs children at Kurn Hatin boarding school, in special events and ceremonies.
